Every now and then, a renovation comes along that feels like more than just a renovation. With the help of Howie Guja from our team, Justin Charette and Alexander Atkins found their home in Bellport, and over time, transformed it into something that reflects not just their aesthetic, but their point of view. Thoughtful, edited, and full of intention, this project is a study in how a house can become a true extension of the people who live in it.
Recently featured in 1stDibs Introspective and Rue Magazine, their renovation is a standout example of how thoughtful design and a clear vision can completely reshape a space. What started as a modest 1960s structure is now something layered, moody, and entirely their own.
Justin, founder of JUSTIN CHARETTE DESIGN, is known for trusting his instincts, and this project is no exception. As Rue put it, “Turn a four bedroom home into a one bedroom? He will do it.” And he did. Together, Justin and Alexander made confident choices from the start. Black window trim with black window treatments throughout, a layout that favored flow over bedroom count, and a moodier, more modern sensibility that stands apart in Bellport. “Here, it is a bit more beachy or it is very antique,” Justin said. “You do not have a ton of people doing more modern, moody design work.”
The first level was thoughtfully renovated to bring a new sense of character to the home. The entry foyer was refreshed with hexagonal tile flooring, a sculptural light fixture, and a curated mix of textures that sets the tone for what is to come. Just off the entry, the office was reimagined as a moody space, with dark green walls, graphic carpeting, and bold art that give it a grounded and intimate feel.
The living room is one of our favorite spaces in the house. The black shiplap wall makes a striking first impression but also serves a thoughtful purpose, allowing the television to disappear into the background rather than compete for attention. It brings depth and calm to the room, with materials, textures, and light working together to create a space that feels both elevated and quietly confident.
Just off the dining room, the kitchen was updated with fresh countertops, updated appliances, a black subway tile backsplash, and subtle design details that connect it to the rest of the home. It has quickly become a favorite spot for their miniature schnauzer, Finland.
Upstairs was reimagined as a full primary suite. A former bedroom became a walk in closet, a den was added just off the bedroom, and the bathroom (finished entirely in black), stands out as one of the boldest spaces in the home.
One of the most striking transformations happened outside. The original white vinyl siding was replaced with Alaskan yellow cedar shingles, finished in a deep slate gray, giving the home a much stronger architectural presence. New windows and doors were installed throughout, and the surrounding landscape was completely reimagined to create a softer transition between indoors and out.
What we love most is the attitude behind this transformation. Unafraid to go beyond the expected, to make clear decisions, and to create something that feels both elevated and deeply personal. Their renovation captures something that is quietly reshaping Bellport, a new energy, defined by creativity, design, and intention. It is a beautiful example of how thoughtful homeowners are helping to move the village forward.
Congratulations to Justin and Alexander for creating a home that feels so true to who they are.
